Aesthetic Death Records ist ein 1992 gegründetes Independentlabel.

Geschichte

Das in Worcestershire entstandene Label wurde 1992 als Vertrieb gegründet. Seit 1994 verlegt das Label Extreme- und Doom-Metal-Bands, mit Auflagen von 200 bis zu 3000 Einheiten. In den ersten Jahren erschienen nur vereinzelte Alben. Die ersten eigenen Produkte des Labels waren Veröffentlichungen der Gruppen Esoteric und Fleurety. Der Esoteric-Musiker Greg Chandler brachte sich hinzukommend bei vielen Veröffentlichungen des Labels als Tontechniker ein und masterte diverse Alben die über das Label veröffentlicht wurden. Ebenso erschienen Nebenprojekte von Esoteric-Musikern, wie Lysergene von Gordon Bicknell und Dead Beat Project von Olivier Goyet, via Aesthetic Death.

Ab der zweiten Hälfte 2000er Jahre intensivierte Gregg die Tätigkeit von Aesthetic Death als Label. Mit den seither erschienenen Veröffentlichungen erlange das Label einen positiven Ruf bei Anhängern extremen Doom-Metals. Die eher dem Post-Industrial, insbesondere dem Death Industrial zuzurechnenden Veröffentlichungen von Goatpsalm und Black Depths Grey Waves, überzeugten die Rezensenten der Metal-Presse hingegen nicht und wurden gelegentlich gar als unverständlich, abwertend beurteilt.

Philosophie

Von Beginn an betrieb Gregg das Label allein. Dabei räumte er ein, dass er eine Vorliebe für Musik habe die „slow, heavy“ und „dark“ sei. Er suche nach düsterer, introvertierter, ernsthafter und nachdenklicher Musik. Die Bands, die er verlege, wähle er nicht aufgrund ihrer Bekanntheit oder optionaler Verkaufsmöglichkeiten aus, sondern aus persönlicher Verbundenheit.

„Jede Veröffentlichung sagt viel über meine Gefühle, zu der jeweiligen Zeit, aus. Es spiegelt meine Gefühle und die Art von Musik, die mir in der Zeit half zu existieren. Ich bin nur an Musik interessiert die mich befriedigt.“

Dabei versteht Gregg das Verhältnis von Aesthetic Death zu den unter Vertrag stehenden Bands als familiär. Auch in der Wahrnehmung der Musikpresse sowie in Verlautbarungen von Musikern und Bands wird auf das persönliche Engagements des Labelbetreibers verwiesen.
