FAQ[Bearbeiten]

What's it all about?[Bearbeiten]

The different versions of the Wikipedia still contain a lot of articles of the same name which don't offer interlanguage links. With the Interwiki-Link-Checker you can help to improve the internationalisation of the Wikipedia.

How does it work?[Bearbeiten]

de:Benutzer:SirJective (de.wikipedia) compiles a list of pages which bear the same name in different languages. Although a big step it is not enough, the decision whether the two articles deal with the same subject can't be automated. This is where you as a human step in and make a decision guided by the computer.

How can I help?[Bearbeiten]

So now it's your turn. The two different language versions have to be loaded into your browser window by means of the Interwiki-Link-Checker. Then you are able to compare these versions and fill in the form on the bottom of the page. On the basis of these entries a bot will later on produce the interlanguage links. The following articles are part of the database:

  • Same lemma both Wikis
  • No redirect in one of them
  • No Disambiguation in one of the Wikis
  • No interwiki in one of them to the other Wiki

How to use the Interwiki-Link-Checker ?[Bearbeiten]

You need to go to http://tools.wikimedia.de/~flacus/IWLC/. Next, you choose the combination of languages you want to work with and start the script. Two articles of the chosen language combination are shown next two each other. In the lower frame you can submit your vote to the database. If two (or three) or more wikipedians rate an article combination the same way, it will be processed by the bot according to the vote (e.g. 3 x "yes" leads to addition of interwiki links to one or both of the articles). Additionally, on the lower right hand you can change the language of the lower frame. The language combination of the articles can be modified by clicking "change database". Feel free to look at the statistics.

What needs to be considered ? (Changed!)[Bearbeiten]

Your browser needs to accept framesets, in order to retain your language preferences, cookies must be enabled.

What’s given in the table indexing the article combinations ?[Bearbeiten]

DB-Nr. Internal number of language combination
Lang 1 Language in left frame
Lang 2 Language in right frame
24h Edits per 24 hours, means of 7 days
Selection Number of articles in current selection
Total Total number of articles of this combination of languages
% percentage of processed articles (colour-coded)
Last edit Date/Time of last vote

Language combinations that have been edited within the last 5 minutes are marked by a green date/time stamp in the last edit column. Yellow fields will mark any edits in the last 15 minutes.

When the number of articles in the selection runs down to zero, the database of this language combination is locked for 24h. It is not possible to choose this database anymore. Four hours before unlocking the database with another selection of articles, it is displayed in grey.

Why do I get the same articles over and over?[Bearbeiten]

  • How long is the average time between click and that a bot adds the interwiki links?

Each article has to be voted three times identically. So people are bound to get the same article from time to time. Obviously, this happens more often if few people vote in a given article combination. After this, it is removed from the visible part of the Interwikilink-checker database and will be "botted" on the next night.

Language combinations[Bearbeiten]

78 combinations between all "big" (>40.000 articles) languages (de,en,es,fr,it,nl,pl,pt,sv) will be shown, additionally some "small" (af,la,hu,ca) wikipedias will also be present.

Update : 36 languages are present... AF,ALS,AR,BG,CA,CS,CY,DA,EL,DE, EN,EO,ES,ET,EU,FI,FR,GL,HE,HU, ID,IT,JA,LA,NDS,NL,NN,NO,PL,PT, RO,SIMPLE,SV,UK,TR,ZH

At the moment not all of them are active .. i think 36 languages would give 36*37/2 = 666 combinations?

No, 36 languages would give 36*35/2 = 630 combinations.--Coppertwig 11:13, 17. Nov. 2006 (CET)

Other Stuff[Bearbeiten]

Tips for Bot-operators[Bearbeiten]

Please use the interwiki.py -warnfile: option. This way it is possible to merge more than one Interwiki link into the same edit. Additionally, articles can be deleted or moved after they have been rated by the Interwiki-Link-Checker. This can be detected by the Interwiki.py-Bot using Live-Wiki-Checkup.

Cross check interwikis[Bearbeiten]

Flacus, there is no need to show, say pt-en pages that don't have pt-en interwiki, but do have one commons interwiki. For instance, pt:Eschlikon didn't have en:Eschlikon, but both had de:Eschlikon (and it:Eschlikon), so it's just a matter of a bot-pass. This happened more than once, so I'm just reporting it. Best wishes, -- Nuno Tavares PT 05:51, 10. Sep 2006 (CEST)

I agree. This happened to me several times. Also, I would suggest adding the opposite type of check: If two articles contain interwiki links to a third language, but these interwiki links differ, then the articles are not the same and should not be displayed by the interwiki-link-checker. This happens, e.g., in he:Love Songs (which links to en:Love Songs (The Beatles album)) compared with es:Love Songs (which links to en:Love Songs (Bee Gees album)).

wikibits.js frame buster code[Bearbeiten]

The annoying frame busting java script code in wikibits.js breaks the link checker audit page. Other than disabling java script is there any way around this problem? (The left page opens as a top window rather than in the frame.)

Wiktionary problems[Bearbeiten]

It looks like in that in the language sk there are a lot of translation of latin words, that are not articles, but just need to be placed in the Wiktionary. Carsrac 12:52, 14. Dez. 2007 (CET)

I have placed {{transwiki|wiktionary}} above a lot of those short pages in the Slovak language. I hope that will solve a lot of conflicts. Carsrac 10:52, 15. Dez. 2007 (CET)

I suggest that with articles that should be wiktionary and be marked with option 6 (Disambiguation). Carsrac 17:36, 1. Mär. 2008 (CET)

Not a match, but I found another page that does match[Bearbeiten]

I was given http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Sheehan and http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Sheehan. These are different, but I saw the link on the English page to the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Sheehan_(hockey). When that was loaded into IWLC I then clicked the [1] Yes button. Does this work, or has it taken my Yes as applying to the original wrong page? Hebrides 10:59, 24. Aug. 2008 (CEST)
