I agree. The color scheme is distinctive. That's it's strength: it says Wikimedia very loudly. It says it too loudly, however, for individual logos to use it. It makes them seem like part of a Wikimedia army, like lame merit badges (no offense) rather than a constellation of related but uniquely interesting or beautiful stars in a constant galaxy.
