Skeeter Davis (* 30. Dezember 1931 als Mary Frances Penick in Dry Ridge, Kentucky, USA; † 19. September 2004 in Nashville, Tennessee) war eine US-amerikanische Country- und Popmusik-Sängerin.
Biografie [Bearbeiten]
Mary Frances Penick wurde als ältestes von sieben Kindern der Eheleute William und Sarah Penick geboren. Ihren Spitznamen Skeeter (Moskito) erhielt sie bereits in der Kindheit, weil sie sehr lebhaft war.
Zu Beginn ihrer Karriere sang sie im Duett mit ihrer Freundin Betty Jack Davis als Davis Sisters. Die Freundin starb bei einem Autounfall am 2. August 1953, Skeeter Davis wurde dabei schwer verletzt. Daraufhin begann Skeeter Davis eine Solo-Karriere; ihr größter Erfolg war The End Of The World aus dem Jahre 1963. Sie war auch eine beliebte Duett-Sängerin, beispielsweise mit Bobby Bare.
Skeeter Davis starb am 19. September 2004 an den Folgen einer Brustkrebserkrankung.
