  • Parasiten: Parasites of hardhead (Mylopharodon conocephalus) and Sacramento pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus grandis) from the North Fork Feather River, Plumas and Butte Counties, California auf http://humboldt-dspace.calstate.edu/xmlui/handle/2148/443
  • Critical Swimming Velocity: The critical swimming velocity (Ucrit) of four California stream fishes, hardhead, Mylopharodon conocephalus, hitch, Lavinia exilicauda, Sacramento pikeminnow, Ptychocheilus grandis, and Sacramento sucker, Catostomus occidentalis was measured at 10, 15, and 20°C. Hardhead, Sacramento sucker, and Sacramento pikeminnow swimming performances tended to be lowest at 10°C, higher at 15°C, and then decreased or remained constant at 20°C. Hitch swimming performance was lower at 10°C than at 20°C. There were no significant differences among species at 10 or 15°C, although pikeminnow and hitch were ca. 20% slower than hardhead or sucker. At 20°C hardhead, Sacramento sucker, and Sacramento pikeminnow had remarkably similar Ucrit but hitch were significantly (by 11%) faster. We recommend that water diversion approach velocities should not exceed 0.3 ms–1 for hitch (20–30 cm total length) and 0.4 ms–1 for hardhead, Sacramento pikeminnow, and Sacramento sucker (20–30 cm TL) auf http://www.springerlink.com/content/h171444802447537/

Beschreibung/Morphologie[Quelltext bearbeiten]

Hierfür suche ich eine treffende Übersetzung: “Hardhead are large cyprinids, reaching lengths in excess of 60 cm SL. Body shape is similar to that of Sacramento squawfish, with which they co-occur, but the body is deeper and heavier and the head is less pointed. Hardhead also differ from squawfish in that their maxilla do not extend beyond the anterior margin of the eye and they possess a frenum connecting the premaxilla to the head. Hardhead have 8 dorsal rays, 8-9 anal rays, and 69-81 lateral line scales. Adults have large molariform pharyngeal teeth, but juvenile teeth are hooklike. Juveniles are silver; adults are brown-bronze dorsally. During the spawning season adult males develop fine nuptial tubercles in the head region (Moyle 1976)”.
