William Hudson

William Hudson (* um 1730 in Kendal; † 23. Mai 1793 in London) war ein britischer Apotheker und Botaniker. Sein offizielles botanisches Autorenkürzel lautet „Huds.“.

Leben und Wirken

William Hudson war Apotheker von Beruf, daneben Botaniker (Mykologe, Algologe, Bryologe), auch Entomologe.^[1] Von 1757 bis 1758 war Hudson als Nachfolger von Henry Rimius († 1756) stellvertretender Bibliothekar (Assistant librarian) am British Museum.^[2] Sein größtes Werk, Flora anglica, brachte er 1762 heraus. Als Nachfolger von John Wilmer (1697–1767) wurde er am 14. März 1765^[3] zum Gartendirektor und Pflanzendemonstrator (Praefectus horti and botanical demonstrator) am Chelsea Physic Garden ernannt, eine Position, die er bis 1771 innehatte.

Ehrungen

Am 5. November 1761 wurde Hudson als Mitglied („Fellow“) in die Royal Society gewählt.^[4] 1791 wurde er Mitglied der Linnean Society of London.

Carl von Linné benannte ihm zu Ehren die Gattung Hudsonia der Pflanzenfamilie der Zistrosengewächse (Cistaceae).^[1]
