Early Life and Education

Adams grew up in Mechanicsville Maryland where he attended rural Chopticon High School. He received a BS in Biochemistry and a BA in Biopsychology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County which he attended on full scholarship via the Meyerhoff Scholarship Program.[2] As an undergraduate he participated in research projects in the Netherlands and Zimbabwe, and worked in the lab of Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner, Dr Tom Cech.

Adams went on to medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine as an Eli Lilly and Company Scholar, were he served on the student class council. Prior to finishing medical school, Dr. Adams completed a Masters in Public Health, with a focus on chronic disease prevention at the University of California at Berkeley. He completed his Internship in Internal Medicine (2002-2003) at St. Vincents Hospital, and Residency in Anesthesiology (2003-2006) at Indiana University, both in Indianapolis. He is Board Certified in Anesthesiology.

Career

After two years in private practice at Ball Memorial Hospital, Adams was named Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Indiana University[3] where he teaches residents and maintains a clinical focus on regional anesthesia and pain management. He served on the anesthesia department’s clinical competency committee, and lectured on governmental affairs, physician advocacy, and professional diversity. Adams works clinically at Eskenazi Hospital, a level 1 trauma center, where he serves as chair of the Hospital Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Adams has offered several academic papers and book chapters, including chapters in Anesthesia Student Survival Guide, A case based approach,"[4] and an editorial in the American Journal of Public Health entitled, “Are Pain Management Questions in Patient Satisfaction Surveys Driving the Opioid Epidemic".[5]

In December 2014 Adams was appointed Indiana State Health Commissioner, only the second African American to ever serve in this position.[6] In this role he oversees the Public Health Protection and Laboratory Services, Health and Human Services, Health Care Quality and Regulatory, and Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commissions.  He also serves as secretary of Indiana State Department of Health's executive board, as chairman of the Indiana State Trauma Care Committee, as President of the Healthy Hoosier Foundation, and as co-chairman of the Indiana Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative Governing Council.[7] Dr. Adams has testified before both the US Senate (Committee on Aging)[8] and the US House of Representatives[9], and has been an invited presenter and/or participant in healthcare discussions at The White House, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Academy of Sciences.


Physician Leadership and Advocacy

Adams has served in the leadership of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, and on the Boards of the Indiana Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Indiana State Medical Association.[10] In this latter role he was elected to serve on the executive committee. He is immediate past Chair of the Professional Diversity Committee for the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and also serves on their Health and Public Policy, and Governmental Affairs Committees.

Media

Adams has been quoted, interviewed, or mentioned numerous times in the media, mostly related to his work in public health and advocacy. During his time as Indiana State Health Commissioner, Adams lead Indiana’s efforts to deal with the largest HIV outbreak related to injection drug use in the history of the United States. This resulted in interviews for Time magazine[11], NPR[12], The New York Times[13], USA Today[14], and MSNBC[15], among many others.

Dr. Adams is married and has three children, and resides in Fishers, Indiana.
