the expositions of Francis Vatable dictatedin his study and taken from some students note-book.Towards the end of his life Vatable became Abbeof Bellozane, where he died in 1547. 175 James Tussan (Jacobus Tussanus) TO this sixteenth-century Humanist Bezadevotes only six lines of letterpress, andhe gives no information regarding himbeyond this, that he was Regius Professorof Greek in the Academy of Paris, Tussanwas joint teacher with Peter Danes. When theSorbonne theologians entered their complaint againstthe professors of the Royal College, as stated in thepreceding notice of Vatable, Danes is mentioned,not Tussan. When Calvin was studying at Paris in1528-30, he wrote to Francis Daniel, of Orleans,telling his friend with whom he was lodging, withwhom he took an airing on horseback, and whatclasses he was attending. He would, so he wrote,have become chamber-companion with a mutualfriend had the house of that friends father not beensituated at a considerable distance from the class- 176
