Text Appearing Before Image:
hold of him, crying out to all the people, Men of Israel, help us. Thisis the man who teaches the people everywhere not to obey the law of Moses, nor to worship here; and beside this, he has brought with him into the temple,Gentiles, who are not allowed to come in this holy place. Soon all the city wasin an uproar, and the people ran together and took Paul and brought himaway from the temple; and immediately the gates leading into the courts of thetemple were shut. As they were about to kill him, some person went and toldthe chief captain of the Roman soldiers, who stayed in a castle near the temple,to guard it and keep order there. Then the chief captain, taking some of his soldiers with him, ran downamong the people, who, when they saw him coming, stopped beating Paul. And the chief captain took him from them and commanded him to be bound, and asked who he was and what he had done. And some of the multitudecried one thing, and some another, so that no one could tell what they said. 298
Text Appearing After Image:
PAUL PREACHES AT EPHESUS. THE PEOPLE BURN THEIR BOOKS. 299 A.CTB XIX. 19. Paul is Saved from the People. He goes to Rome. WHEN the chief captain took Paul from the people, he gave orders thathe should be taken into the castle. And when they came upon thestairs the soldiers carried Paul, to save him from the people, for theyfollowed after him, crying out, Away with him! kill him! The chief captain, knowing that the Jews would surely kill Paul, and findingthat he was a Roman, sent him to the Roman governor of Judea, who livedat the city of Cesarea, and whose name ■was Felix. Paul remained in prison atCesarea for two years, until Festus, another governor came to take Felixs place, when he was taken out of prison and brought before his accusers. Now it was a law, that any Roman who was going to be put to death, mightask to be taken before Caesar, the emperor, for the emperor to say whether heshould die, or be allowed to live; and as Paul knew that if he was taken toJerusalem to be tried
