English: A flag sketched by the anonymous C. F.: the accompanying text is reproduced below:

In "The Book of Buried Treasure" (Rd. Paine, 1911) is to be found the following:- "A Flag was hoisted, called 'Old Roger,' "described as having "in the middle of it an anatomy (skeleton) with an hourglass in one hand, and a dart in the heart with three drops of blood proceeding from it in the other." This description is from a quotation from an old account of John Quelch, a pirate executed at Boston in 1704. There is a photographic reproduction of a water colour drawing of this pattern of flag which is in the Bibliothcque nationale (Paris) in " Armee et Marine," 1900, of which the enclosed sketch is a copy. Whether this flag is black or yellow does not appear, it might be either, both would come out almost equally dark in a photograph.

Below the flag is a pendant on which are three skulls and cross-bones similar to the 17th Lancers' Badge. It is described below as a "Pavilion de pirate," but the inscription on the picture itself is too indistinct to be decipherable. The pendant seems to be stiffened with light battens
