Roadmap for Deploying the Monuments Lists to other Language Versions and Feeding the WLM Monuments Database[Quelltext bearbeiten]
Draft Version for Review – Please complete and comment!
Defining the „Minimal“ Approach[Quelltext bearbeiten]
At its launch meeting, the „Wiki Loves Monuments“ Switzerland working group decided to opt for a "minimal" version of the contest in the whole of Switzerland. A "minimal" approach means that we are aware of our limited resources and will focus on the necessary core tasks to make the contest function before assuming tasks that may be considered optional. At the same time we underscored our willingness to carry out the contest in the whole country, and not only in the German speaking regions.
With regard to the monuments lists, this would mean:
- Building as much as possible on the work that has already been done by the German speaking community.
- Focussing on having complete monuments lists for all the PCP/KGS/PBC A- and B-objects (in German); existing lists of other protected buildings may be included in the contest; creating more such lists is however not a priority.
- Providing monuments lists in French and Italian for the regions where those languages are spoken. Creating lists in French or Italian for regions where these languages are not the official languages or creating monuments lists in English might be an option if there is a willingness among the respective communities to shoulder the necessary work. For the WLM CH organizing team, this is however not a priority.
- Finding a pragmatic approach with regard to the handling of multilingual issues in the international monuments database as well as in the tools and apps that are used for the contest. The bottom line would be that people can easily access information about the monuments in their region in the language of the region. Other multilingual features might be nice to have, but are not a priority.
- Finding a pragmatic approach with regard to the challenge of managing the same data in several language versions of Wikipedia. Moving the monument data to Wikidata is a mid-term goal (see project page), but not a priority in the run-up of this year’s contest.
Multilingual Terminology (Key Terms)[Quelltext bearbeiten]
Deutsch | français | italiano | English |
---|---|---|---|
Kulturgüterschutz | Protection des biens culturels | Protezioni dei beni culturali | Protection of Cultural Property |
KGS-Inventar | Inventaire PBC | Inventario PBC | PCP Inventory |

Phase 1: Preparation Work[Quelltext bearbeiten]
Tasks 1 to 4 can be carried out in parallel; it could however be helpful to agree on the quality criteria (task 1) before adding the PCP numbers to the B-objects as this could be an occasion to partly review the lists (task 3).
Task 1: Agree on quality criteria for the monuments lists; document the quality criteria as a reference for our further work.[Quelltext bearbeiten]
The decision with regard to the quality criteria they want to retain for their monuments lists is up to the different Wikipedia communities. It certainly makes sense, however, to exchange views across linguistic communities and to take into account the feedback received from the public authorities. Furthermore, it will facilitate the cooperation if differences between the language communities are made transparent.
Issues to address:
- What terms in the monuments description do we translate into the language of the reader? In which cases do we leave the name in the local language or include the „official“ name with or without translation?
- What are the conventions regarding the coordinates? (It makes sense to use the conventions used by the PCP Section of the FOCP; see the minutes of the meeting with their representatives.)
- How do we indicate sources? (How to cite monuments lists? – PDFs or Excel-File? How to cite entries on GIS portals? How to deal with the fact that the PDFs provided by the PCP Section of the FOCP are replaced and renamed every year, making links defunct?)
- Do we follow the practice of the PCP of attributing two different PCP numbers to bridges which cross cantonal or municipal borders? (Examples: the Sitterviadukt has two PCP numbers for the same object: 8304 under St. Gallen and 460 under Appenzell Ausserrhoden; the Eisenbahnviadukt Koblenz-Felsenau also has two PCP numbers: 10514 in Koblenz AG, and 9875 in Leuggern AG).
- Separate entries for collections: The database of the PCP Section at the FOCP has separate entries for collections and the buildings they are located in if these buildings are also protected themselves (with separate PCP-numbers). The monuments lists on Wikipedia should probably have an entry for each object that has a separate PCP number.
People to involve:
- Voyager (lead of the monuments lists project project on German Wikipedia)
- Moumou (community liaison for the French speaking community)
- Iopensa (community liaison for the Italian speaking community)
- Interested people from the respective communities
Quality Criteria: Quality Assurance
Task 2: Agree on the monuments list templates and standard page design[Quelltext bearbeiten]
Create example pages in each language version.
Issues to address:
- Is there a consensus for having two separate lists for PCP objects and „other“ monuments?
- Should we use a single list template for the two separate lists or two different templates?
- Should we use templates for the text preceding the lists and the legend?
- What unique identifiers do we use? Is there a consensus for using the “CH-PCP” prefix for identifiers of PCP A- and B-objects? Is there a consensus for using the “CH-ZH” ; “CH-BE”; “CH-LU”; etc. prefixes for lists of “other” monuments? (Maarten Dammers recommends using "/" as a separator between the prefix and the number, as it "makes it easy to do funky template logical like showing the right municipality", see e-mail to international wlm-mailinglist of 8 June 2013)
- What language do we use for the variable names of the templates? Can the French and Italian communities live with templates containing variable names in German? Do we want to maintain templates where variable names are translated across language versions? Or should we opt for English variable names?
- Design of the templates and monument list pages (in each of the language versions)
People to involve:
- Voyager (lead of the monuments lists project on German Wikipedia)
- Moumou (community liaison for the French speaking community)
- Iopensa (community liaison for the Italian speaking community)
- Interested people from the respective communities
Task 3: Finish the lists with B-objects in German[Quelltext bearbeiten]
- Create the lists per municipality for the remaining cantons
- add PCP numbers to all the B-objects
- do a quality check
- report errors found on the PCP lists
People to involve:
- Voyager (lead)
- Gingko2g ?
- Schulerst
- Who else is ready to help?
Task 4: Understand the various uses of the data and the ensuing requirements.[Quelltext bearbeiten]
Issues to be addressed:
- Which data is going to be deployed to other language versions and to the monuments database?
- How will the data be used in the various tools and apps, as for example maps that can be embedded in web pages or mobile apps (in particular, we’ll need to understand how multilingual issues will be handled).
- What are the ensuing requirements for the monuments lists?
- What part of data processing needs to be done by hand and what can be done by script?
People to involve:
- Point 1: Community liaison persons for French and Italian Wikipedia
- Point 2: Ilario, could you ask the people taking care of the tools to provide an overview at the international level? (we are not the only project team interested in these issues)
- Point 3: Ilario, do you want to make a proposal based on the information gathered in point 2?
- Point 4: We need to get in touch with someone who eventually will do the scripting; he/she should have a key role with regard to this assessment.
Phase 2: Deploying the Monuments Lists to Other Language Versions[Quelltext bearbeiten]
Task 1: Deploy the monuments lists to the French and Italian version of Wikipedia.[Quelltext bearbeiten]
