The above measurements, particularly the small capacityof the cranium, and the low receding forehead, which isunfavourable to a development of the frontal lobes, indicatethe low plane of intellectual development of the Australiannatives. The smaller the skull is the lower the race ranks inculture, but the organs of the face are all the more developedin comparison with the rest of the head. The features distinguishing the cranium of the Australianfrom that of the European are, in the first place, the pro-jecting jaws (the prognathous character), which are very rareand never marked among Europeans ; in the second place,the low forehead and the small capacity, which among Euro-peans would be called microcephalous, and would indicatea weak mind ; in the third place, the flat nose, which is alsovery rare in Europe ; and finally, the large Daubenton angle. >
