m, which fol-lowed three years later. In 1903 the Nobel prize was awardedjointly to the Curies and Becquerel for the discovery of radio-activity and the new radio active substances. Cranium had been extracted from the pitchblende ores ofSt. Joachimsthal. The Curies found the residues were moreradio active than the remaining uranium accounted for, and thisled them to suspect the presence of something hitherto un-known, of greater radioactivity than uranium. After a long research under hardships and poverty, theyfinally succeeded in getting a radio active constituent concen-trated to a point millions of times stronger in activity than theuranium Becquerel had observed and proved beyond disputethat rhis activity was caused by a hitherto unknown element,which they named Radium, because of the rays emitted. Having discovered Radium, they proceeded to establishmost of the data available as to the characteristics of the cle-ment itself. Monsieur Curie was unfortunately killed in anaccident. The work is still being carried on by Madame Curiein her laboratory at Paris. She has proved among other things that Radium givesoff heat continuously; that a gram of it gives off sufficient heatin forty-five minutes to raise the temperature of a gram ofwater from freezing to the boiling point, and this goes on ata rate of scarcely noticeable diminution in a life time.
