The Percheron is an ancient French breed, originally famed forits capacity for rapid locomotion with a heavy load, and especiallyadapted to drawing the heavy diligences or post-coaches used inFrance before the clays of the railway and locomotive. Traditionhas long attributed to the Percheron — confessedly among the mostactive and powerful of the heavy breeds of the European Continent— an Oriental origin; but it was not until the researches recentlymade in the compilation of pedigrees for the first volume of thePercheron Stud Book of France that the extent to which the bloodof the Orient had entered into the formation of the Percheron racewas fully realized.
