Vizefeldwebel Ludwig Weber was a fighter pilot in Jagdstaffel 3, apparently joining some time around November 1916. He attained his first victory, a BE2, on 3 April 1917. Three days later he was wounded in Albatros D.II 510/16, possibly by 48 Squadron, who claimed two Albatros scouts O.O.C. northeast of Arras. Weber was hospitalized, but returned to Jasta 3 later , and scored his second victory on 27 September 1917, a Camel.

...

There is a photo of his Albatros D.V 2236/17 of Jasta 3, marked with the name "Lulu" in large letters on the fuselage (anyone named "Lulu" among your distant relatives ?? ;). Anyway, the photo is inscribed, "Ltn. Ludwig Weber, Jasta 3 vom Nov. 1916 bis Nov. 1917." Thus the inscription indicates at some point he was promoted to Leutnant and left Jasta 3 in November 1917. I know little of his later career; however, there is a photo of him in "Bloody April...Black September" which shows him with a Siemens-Schuckert D.III or D.IV, types which only saw service in 1918. The caption for the photo mentions "He had taught Hermann Frommherz and Hermann Göring to fly", so apparently your Grandpa wasn't the only one to hear that story.

...

I can only add that he went to JsSch I on 17Nov17 to briefly (very briefly) serve as an instructor, then on to KEST 4b where he gained his 3rd v/c in Mar 1918. Oh, after his WIA, he returned to Jasta 3 from the hospital on 28Jul17. R.

...

let me add that Ludwig Weber was born on 31Oct1895. He died in Beinwil/Switzerland (was 1977 still alive).

...

1928 Weber became a Junkers-pilot. Indeed, has also was a pilot in Abessinia (4 years). From 1936 through 1939 he instructed Portuguese air men on Ju-52.He finished his flying career 1949 in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, were he worked as technical director for "Viacoa Aerea Sao Paulo"

...

I forgot to mention that he flew between 1926 and 1928 as a charter pilot for a company named "Schwarz" in the Baden area.

The ’plane was built by the Emperor's German pilot Ludwig Weber, who had come to Addis Ababa in 1933, as a representative of the German firm of Junkers, and had been commissioned to assist in the establishment of Ethiopian aviation.
Weber based the design for the aeroplane “Tsehai” on a German model which had been built in Freiburg a year or so earlier. He began construction work in Addis Ababa on no less than three aircraft, but only one, “Tsehai” on account of the Fascist invasion, was ever completed.

...

The ’plane’s first flight took place at the very end of 1935, or the beginning of 1936, when “Tsehai” was flown by Herr Weber in person.
The history of “Tsehai” was a short one. The ’plane had flown only 30 hours when the advance of the Fascist invaders obliged Weber and his staff to leave Ethiopia. They departed at the beginning of May 1936, only a few days prior to the entry into the city of Pietro Badoglio’s Fascist army.

Nov. 1915 seinen ersten Luftsieg errang. --Beo.Bachter (Diskussion) 13:14, 31. Jan. 2024 (CET)Beantworten
