Cheongsong County in North Gyeongsang Province means “green pine tree,” reminding one of scenery in which a crane comes down on a pine tree at any time. The county is an area where 83 percent of the land is forests and fields with high hills, deep valleys and clean water. It has abundant tourism resources, including a spring, spa and old houses. At the Jusanji Reservoir, dozens of willows more than 100 years old are half immersed in water, creating a splendid view with wet fog. Made in 1721, the reservoir was the location for the shooting of director Kim Ki-duk’s film “Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall...and Spring Again”

Many Koreans, however, associate the county with a prison built there in 1983 after the Chun Doo-hwan administration introduced in December 1980 a "protective custody system" for separating hardened criminals from society. The administration initially considered establishing such a prison on a remote island on the west coast. Problems with water supply and the living standards of prison guards, however, ultimately had the facilities built in Cheongsong County.

The Cheongsong Correctional Institution is at a place hard for inmate to break out. It is called "the fort of Papillon" because it is surrounded by a steep mountain and a river. Even the notorious jailbreaker Shin Chang-won could not break out of the prison. Gang leader Kim Tae-chon also served time there. While the Cheongsong prison became an average prison after the protective custody law was abolished in 2005, many high-profile criminals still are sent there. Many prisons are named after their locations, so the Cheongsong prison often appears in media reports because of the notoriety of its prisoners.

The people of Cheongsong County is protesting Justice Minister Lee Kwi-nam`s suggestion of putting death row inmates in the prison and installing execution facilities. Cheongsong County Governor Han Dong-soo has asked the ministry to reconsider the plan, saying the move will hurt Cheongsong’s reputation. The leader of a Cheongsong civic group also says relocating execution facilities to such a small county like Cheongsong will make it a “county of prison or execution.” The county wants the central government to rename the prison without Cheongsong and rethink the plan to install execution facilities there. The government should consider this reasonable request with sincerity.

The Cheongsong Pumped Storage Power Plant, for which Doosan carried out the electrical installation and construction work, began its operating life after an opening ceremony. The Cheongsong Pumped Storage Power Plant, located in Pacheon- myeon, Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, comprises two 300MW units with a total output of 600MW; it is the world’s largest - as well as Korea’s first remotely-controlled pumped storage power plant. The Cheongsong plant, Korea’s sixth pumped storage power plant, will be responsible for ensuring a stable supply of electricity to the northern part of Gyeonsangbuk-do. One of the characteristics of the Cheongsong plant is its status as a new power plant model for management innovation, as it is capable of significantly reducing the operation costs by remote operation from the Samrangjin Pumped Storage Power Plant situated some 130km away.

For the Cheongsong Pumped Storage Power Plant Construction Project, which took six years and four months to complete from the beginning of its construction in September 2000, Doosan successfully carried out all of the electrical and related auxiliary construction, except civil engineering, and proved itself once again as a company with world-class power plant construction abilities.

Jusan Reservoir or River/Lake Sightseeing ...

Jusan Reservoir is located in Juwangsan National Park of Ijeong-ri, Budong-myeon, Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk. In 1720 (46th year of the reign of Chosun King Sukjong), it was started to be formed, and was completed in 1721 (1st year of the reign of Chosun King Gyeongjong). It was formed by Jin-Gwon Lim, Jin-Pyo Lee and other villagers and the original scale was 1,175ft around the lake and 8ft in the depth. As the trees grow underwater, the scenery is extraordinarily magnificent. For a long time since the formation, it has undergone several repairs to have the present length of 63m, height of 10.5m, volume of 105,000tons of water and 13.7ha of area.

Jusan Reservoir has never become dried for over 170 years even in the longest droughts. Since today, it has never exposed its bottoms and as 150-year-old Korean weeping willows and about 30 Salix glandulosas naturally grow in the reservoir, the scenery is more than beautiful. Also, there is a monument honoring the accomplishments of Sir Lee on top of the dam. The inscription on the epitaph says “as the water is reserved by the dam constructed with devotion to interest all people, a piece of stone is erected to admire the wills for all eternity."

The forest densely surrounding the 8m-deep Jusan Reservoir makes this place a heavenly space for the wizards. With the old trees in the pure water, the scenery of an enchanted land displays. In the reservoir, 150-year-old Korean weeping willows and about 30 Salix glandulosas naturally grow.

Although Jusan Reservoir is located inside Juwangsan National Park and has pure water and beautiful natural environment, not many people came to visit it. As it is located in the deep woods of Juwang Mountains, its magnificent views were not reached by many people. Since it has gradually been popularized, about 20 trees in the water dried and died, but are still keeping their positions to be the pride of deep Juwang Mountains. In a clear day without wet-fog or wind, the view of the trees growing underwater is also beautiful.

Jusan Reservoir is surrounded by the luxuriant forest stretched from Yeong Summit of Juwang Mountains, so it makes you feel as if you are in an another world that is quiet and warm. You can forget about the busy life and have a pleasant rest in here.

Cheongsong County (Cheongsong-gun) is a county in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea.

Cheongsong is known among Koreans primarily for its apples and for a famous prison situated around Cheongsong. Cheongsong apples took up a large percentage of consumed apples in Korea as well as Seoul. Originally, Cheongsong produced a large variety of apples but now produces mainly Korean 'Sundown' apples.

Jusan Pond, located in the county, was the site of filming for Kim Ki-duk's 2003 film Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. The floating monastery was built for the purpose of the film, and Kim obtained permission from the authorities to keep it there for a full year. Filming took place over the course of that year, numbering 22 days in total, after which the set was removed and destroyed. The pond is part of a national park, so no buildings of any sort are permitted.

Cheongsong can be found in Mt. Juwangsan National Park and home to a thousand-year old temple. Bokwangsa Temple is one of many cultural assets preserved in this area, which is also blessed with rich valleys. It is rarely visited by tourists, and maintains solitary qualities. The Cheongsong Cultural Festival is celebrated here each year.
