The expedition to Darfour was successful, but not withoutsome fighting. Gordon was not a little disheartened when hefound how wide extended w£^ the slave-trade. As he went toObeid, on his return to Khartoom, he fell in with a caravan,and was asked to allow them to travel under the protection ofhis soldiers. He assented; but learned later on that there wasa gang of eighty slaves with it. Questioning the merchants,they declared that these were their wives and children. Thewomen and children were in chains, a circumstance which didnot tend to confirm what the men said; but there were nomeans of disproving the assertion, and Gordon was obliged tocontent himself with insisting ^that the chains should be re-moved.44

He lost all patience and hope. It seemed no use totry to suppress the traffic; it was more than man could do. Early in January, 1878, Gordon was summoned to Cairo bythe khedive, whose financial condition just then was (as usual)none of the best. It was impossible for Gordon to lessen theexpenses of the Soudan, or to increase its revenue; the annualdeficit was more than a million and a quarter of dollars.
