Addis Ababa, January 19,2004 (WIC)- The Ethiopian and Djiboutian Railway Labour Unions called for serious consideration of rights of employees during the planned concession of the railway to a private company. Ethiopian Labour Union acting president with the Ethio-Djibouti Railway, Mustefa Usman, and his Djiboutian counterpart, Deputy General Manager, Mohammed Mahmud told WIC recently that their labour unions would support the decision taken by both governments of Ethiopia and Djibouti to concede the administration of the railway services to private company for limited number of years. They expressed their belief that the concession would help the railway recover from the serious crisis it has faced. They noted that the railway is faced with a serious threat of collapse mainly because of problems posed on it by lack of modern technology, capital and managerial skills. Officials of the Ethio-Djibouti Railway said on their part that trade and economic benefits of the two countries would be prioritized while conceding the railway administration to a private company. They added that the process of conceding the railway administration and service to a private company would also consider the protection of the rights of more than 3,000 employees who have been striving hard for the survival of the company. The officials said that the concession would help inject new technology and capital to the railway enabling its freight transport service to increase by five fold. It is to be recalled that the governments of Ethiopia and Djibouti have decided to transfer the Ethio-Djibouti railway administration and services through concession to a private company at a cost of 400 million birr.
