not "1889 or 1899" for Friedrich Brandeis the composer. His obituary in the New York Times is archived/filed (as a PDF, online) under "May 16, 1899" (admittedly, in a different font from the main obituary, suggesting the possibility of a misfile; but it is on the same page as several other obituaries which, it seems, are also agreed to be 1899 deaths.) (optimally, someone might have a look at the original May 16 1899 issue and see if the obituary is indeed there, or as does happen, was misfiled by the OCR (Optical Character Recognition program) - failing that, though, the placement of his obituary in the 5/16/99 issue, for someone who died in the same city (New York City) as the newspaper itself (so no thought of a 10-year delay of reporting, usually, or if there was, it would affect all sources) - etc. (For a link to the obit, see the links on the IMSLP page imslp.org/wiki/Category:Brandeis,_Frederick .)
