Forth in Thy Name, O Lord
Forth in Thy Name, O Lord ist ein Kirchenlied methodistischen Ursprungs von Charles Wesley. Zentrales Thema ist der Glaube in Gott in allen unseren Werken.[1]
Es wurde zuerst 1749 in der Sammlung Hymns and Sacred Poems, Volume I in der Kategorie Hymns for Believers unter der Überschrift Before Work (Vor der Arbeit) publiziert.[1]
Ursprünglich umfasste das Lied sechs Strophen. Die Strophen drei und fünf wurde von John Wesley in seiner Sammlung A Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists von 1780 und im United Methodist Hymnal von 1989 weggelassen.[1]
Carlton Young, der Herausgeber des The United Methodist Hymnal, bezeichnete es als „Ausdruck protestantischer Arbeitsethik“.[1]
In der Liturgie wird das Lied als Abschluss des Gottesdienstes oder Morgengebetes gesungen. Es findet auch bei der Ernennung oder Amtseinsetzung anglikanischer Kleriker Einsatz.[1]
Das Lied wird zu verschiedenen Melodien gesungen: Song 34 von Orlando Gibbons (1583–1625), Canonbury (das Robert Schumanns Nachtstück Op. 23/4 entnommen wurde)[2] und Duke Street, das John Warrington Hatton (1710–1793) zugeschrieben wird.[1]

Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go,
my daily labour to pursue;
thee, only thee, resolved to know,
in all I think or speak or do.
The task thy wisdom hath assigned
O let me cheerfully fulfil;
in all my works thy presence find,
and prove thy good and perfect will.
Preserve me from my calling's snare,
and hide my simple heart above,
above the thorns of choking care,
the gilded baits of worldly love.
Thee may I set at my right hand,
whose eyes my inmost substance see,
and labour on at thy command,
and offer all my works to thee.
Give me to bear thy easy yoke,
and every moment watch and pray,
and still to things eternal look,
and hasten to thy glorious day;
For thee delightfully employ
whate'er thy bounteous grace hath given,
and run my course with even joy,
and closely walk with thee to heaven.
