Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 - February 1st to March 31st, 2023
Sharing Brazil's intangible cultural heritage with the world

Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photographic competition to enjoy and celebrate the cultural diversity from around the World through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Everybody can participate.

In Brazil, we are calling for people to dive into their photo, video and audio archives and visit local sites and events that highlight Brazilian culture, folklore or storytelling and upload them to win!

The basic aim of the competition is to collect photos, vídeos and audios of human cultural diversity to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. The media files provided must match the theme, including, but not limited to festivals, material culture, dances, cuisine, clothing or daily life routine emphasizing on folk culture of Brazil.

Why participate?

Participate in Wiki Loves Folklore and help Wikipedia document the living and intangible heritage of Brazil.

Participating is fun! By photographing, videographing and recording audio and sharing the files of heritage nearby you, you can explore more about Brazilian heritage and learn about it. It's a nice challenge to improve your photography, videography and audiography skills, and you can of course win some nice prizes. There are prizes for the 5 best pictures; and prizes for the 10 most valuable contributors --the contributors who help us the most fill the content gap on Brazilian heritage and a special prize for the best picture of the state of Pará, in the context of the Wiki Loves Pará project. All prizes are vouchers and of course also eternal glory! All images, videos and audio files participate on the international competition and will compete for the international awards. More information about the international competition is available here.

You can also upload files that you may have taken already during one of your travels to the national competition of that country. Check if your travel destination participates in Wiki Loves Folklore this year.

Competition rules

We try to keep the competition clean and simple to participate. There are only a few rules for photos, videos and audios to participate in the contest in Brazil. Let's quickly go through them. Every submission should be:

  • Self taken and self uploaded;
  • Uploaded during February and March 2023;
  • Only photographs, videos and audios that totally comply with a CC BY-SA license will be considered;
  • Fall into a category of the contest;

Next to that, there are a few practical rules:

  • You must have an activated e-mail address on Wikimedia Commons;
    • In case you win any national prize, you need to respond to our communication in two weeks to receive the prize;
  • If the media file gets deleted for any reason, it is automatically disqualified from the competition;
  • You are responsible for following the law while taking and uploading the media file.

In February and March, you may upload as many files (old or new) as you want of the living and intangible heritage that you have visited. At the end of this period, the national jury will evaluate the contributions and select the winners in Brazil. At the same time, the international jury will judge the contributions from all around the world.

The Jury

Our jury will process the images through four rounds during April. At the end of this process, the jury determines the winners. If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides. Our jury will be selected during the contest and will be announced before the end of March.

Judging criteria

The jury will determine the winners of the national contest taking into the consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.

Images, Videos and Audios that reach a top ranking of the national finale, will typically at least fulfill the technical criteria of the 'Featured Image' process at Wikimedia Commons. But feel free to submit many images, videos and audios, and let the jury be concerned if they are good enough.
