Perhaps spurred on by a 10,000-unit order that Hudson placed in either 1910 or 1911, Continental's Walter Frederick (who had, coincidentally, worked for Autocar before joining Continental) designed the company's first six-cylinder L-head engine, the 1911 Model 6-C, which developed 60hp from its 421 cubic inches. Hudson used the resulting Model 54 of 1913 to lay the foundation for its claim of being the world's largest manufacturer of six-cylinder cars; Hudson thus popularized six-cylinder engines among low-priced cars, while Continental used the contract as an impetus to open a factory in Detroit.
Continental Motors, however, had the largest slice of that pie by far--one study claimed 90 percent of the independent automakers of the 1920s used Continental's Red Seal engines.
Anmerkungen[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Aus der A.L.A.M. wurde 1912 die National Automobile Chamber of Commerce (N.A.C.C.).
