Hi. I'm from EnWiki. I've pinged you because you speak English, and and I believe you'd be interested in this issue because of your vote in WP:Meinungsbilder/VisualEditor_für_nicht_eingeloggte_und_neu_angemeldete_Benutzer.

A few weeks ago the Wikimedia Foundation deployed Single edit tab at EnWiki. They are in the process of deploying it to all wikis. It gives wikis just one edit link (bearbeiten). That link will normally load the same editor that you used last time, you can set a preference for which editor you always want it to load, and there is now a button inside the editors to switch between them. All of that is fine. The problem is that the Wikimedia Foundation wants to assign Visual Editor as the "Primary" editor. The "primary" editor is the first editor that will load for new users. The project Manager explicitly promised me that he would not try to impose Visual Editor as the default for new users without asking the community first. When Single-Edit-Tab was deployed on EnWiki, it imposed a Visual Editor default.EnWiki and the WMF argued over it. I had to take the issue to the Executive Director. Then one of us wrote a community javascript patch that would set wikitext as the default editor, and we were discussing consensus to apply it to the site-wide javascript. At that point the project manager finally agreed to set Wikitext editor as the default on EnWiki. However they still plan to impose Visual Editor as the default on all other wikis. They tell wikis that they are deploying single-edit-tab, and they explain everything about it EXCEPT the fact that they are imposing Visual Editor as the default for all new users. I don't know if they just assume communities automatically agree Visual Editor should be the default, or they are hoping that existing editors don't notice they are setting it as default. (Existing editors can't see what the default is unless they create a new account).

You should start a Meinungsbilder to determine which editor DeWiki considers to be the "primary" editor, the editor which will load first for new users.

Helpful information:

Visual Editor was created with the goal of making editing faster and easier, helping more people edit, and helping to retain more editors. The Wikimedia Foundation preformed a study to determine VisualEditor's effect on newly registered editors[1]. The study found that Visual Editor did not achieve any of those goals.

  1. New users offered Visual Editor were significantly LESS likely to successfully complete edits (58% vs 64%).
  2. Making edits with Visual Editor took new users much longer (35 seconds for Wikitext vs 2 minutes for VisualEditor).
  3. There was no change in the number of new users who successfully make at least one edit.
  4. There was no change in the number of new users who stay to make more edits.
