Die Musik zum Film Wind River (2017) wurde von Nick Cave und Warren Ellis komponiert.[1]
Ellis sagte: We made the score relatively quickly, two sessions of five days from memory. Taylor came to the sessions, as did David McKenzie, who directed “Hell or High Water,” which really helped move things along .In the early days the directors were always in L.A so there was a day delay in feedback and quite often more than that. So having the director in the studio helps target ideas more efficiently and creates an efficient dialogue. For “Wind River,” we did as usual, which was to go in the studio and start making ideas we think might fit and try to find a palette. The electronics seemed to accompany the snow and internal workings of some of the characters and the vocals, piano and choir the overarching sense of loss and redemption that consumes the characters. xxx A musical realization of nature’s power to drive men mad in spite of its beauty. Sticking in the mind like ice on lungs, Ellis and Cave once again evoke a distinctive regional sound that shows their talent at revealing the universal nature of an outback the reduces humans to their primal selves, with all the poetry and savagery it entails in their deceptively stripped-down approach – a collaboration that Ellis now ventures into.[2]

Der Soundtrack zum Film umfasst 23 Titel und wurde am 4. August 2017 von Lakeshore Records als Download veröffentlicht.[3] Wenige Tage zuvor wurde vorab vom Under The Radar Magazine das Stück Snow Wolf vorgestellt[4] und Lakeshore Records hatte zudem bei Youtube einige Ausschnitte aus einem Querschnitt von Stücken aus dem Soundtrack veröffentlicht.[5]

Every now and then the piano pierces the veil and lets some light come in from somewhere far, far away. “Wind river” is mournful and deep and each cue gives me a feeling of something immobile and eternal which makes the certitude that this score will eventually end something even harder to bear; it also makes this album a reflective place I will be able to return any time, all the time, and drown and burry my own tribulations and burdens. It’s a lonely score that tells me I’m not alone and that everything will pass and turn into dust.[6]
The Soundtrack deals with familiar Cave preoccupations like violence, mystery and the wild emptiness of the American interior, has far more in common with his latest album than his previous soundtrack work with Warren Ellis, and is therefore probably best understood as a cousin of Skeleton Tree than a descendent of their score for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (to give but one example). xxx Skeleton Tree, this melancholia is not used gratuitously, bathed in for its own sake; Cave and Ellis’ arrangements, sparse and spacious, move between moods with impressive tonal agility. Every stroke is expertly measured, every mantra passionately intoned.[7]

Am 18. Dezember 2017 gab die Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences bekannt, dass sich Caves und Ellis' Arbeit auf einer Shortlist befindet, aus der die Nominierungen in der Kategorie Beste Filmmusik im Rahmen der Oscarverleihung 2018 erfolgen werden.[8]
