Tom Naumann with Primal Fear at Rockharz festival (2018)

Tom Naumann (born October 20, 1965 in Esslingen near Stuttgart) is a German heavy metal guitarist, songwriter and live musician. He has also been a guitar teacher since 2006.[1] Naumann plays lead guitar and writes songs with Sinner and Primal Fear, which he has been a part of with two breaks since 1988 and 1997 respectively. Since 2016 he has also been playing as a live musician at “Rock Meets Classic”, an annual concert series in which rock stars such as Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Steve Lukather (Toto) oder Alice Cooper, supported by a symphony orchestra, perform hits from their rock history.

Biography[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Tom Naumann with Sinner in the Hair-Metal look of the 80s (1988, August, Loreley festival)

Naumann began learning electric guitar while still a schoolboy in 1981 after attending a live concert by British rock band Judas Priest and being inspired by the style of lead guitarist Glenn Tipton.[2] Together with classmates he founded the school band Freeze Frame, whose music tended toward AOR. In 1986, Freeze Frame won first place in the "Hard & Heavy" category at the regional state rock competition for Baden-Württemberg[3] and subsequent studio recordings were produced by Mat Sinner.[4] In 1986/1987, Freeze Frame opened several Sinner shows in southern Germany.

After the two guitarists Matthias 'Don' Dieth and Chris 'Angel' Schleifer left Sinner in 1988, Naumann was hired as the second lead guitarist alongside Andy Susemihl for a European tour lasting several weeks. Two years later, Mat Sinner's (solo) album Back to the Bullet was released, which became Naumann's first studio album. By the year 2000, five more studio albums and one live album with Sinner followed. In 1997, Tom Naumann and Mat Sinner stepped in for a live tribute show by fellow Gamma-Ray singer Ralf Scheepers, who was anticipating a possible rehearsal with Judas Priest prepared for the then successor to Rob Halford.[2] As a result of this musical „infidelity“, newly written songs were created that sounded much more aggressive and harder than Sinner had done before, and finally the three musicians founded the Power Metal band Primal Fear. The debut album of the same name surprised the German metal scene positively and entered the German album charts at number 48. [3] Naumann also recorded the second Primal Fear studio album Jaws of Death before leaving both bands shortly after its release for health reasons. In 2003 Naumann rejoined both Sinner and Primal Fear and worked as a songwriter and guitarist on the next four releases of both groups. From 2003 to 2007 he performed with Primal Fear in more than 100 shows in Europe, USA and Japan. The band also played at well-known summer festivals such as Bloodstock Open Air, Graspop Metal Meeting, Tuska Open Air Metal Festival or Wacken Open Air.[4]

In February 2007, Naumann ended his involvement with Sinner and Primal Fear for the second time. At the end of 2013, Naumann was hired again by Primal Fear and replaced Magnus Karlsson as live guitarist, who was touring the extensive tour program planned for the next six months (20 concerts in Europe, 21 in the USA, three in Japan and six summer festivals[4]) had to cancel due to his family situation.[5] From the 2016 album Rulebreaker, Naumann was also active again as a studio musician and songwriter for Primal Fear. Likewise with the revival album Tequila Suicide by Sinner in 2017. With ”Rock Meets Classic” Naumann played 60 shows from 2016 until the Corona year 2020.[6]

Equipment[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Guitars[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Naumann prefers to play Gibson Les Paul style guitars. Two of his favorite models are a black, revised Gibson Les Paul Standard (for live performances, see Rockharz festival photo above) and a black Gibson Les Paul Custom (for studio recordings).[7] In the Rock Meets Classic concerts, he uses Lester models by the German guitar manufacture Maybach, which are similar to the Les Paul, in two light finishes (Midnight Sunset and Edelweiss). Since Naumann is left-handed, he plays the corresponding left-handed versions. For strings, he uses the brand Ernie Ball in gauge 10-52.[8]

Sound[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

In order to create the characteristic heavy metal sound of the 80s, Naumann initially used the then classic Marshall stack combination of a JCM 800/900 amplifier and two stacked boxes, each containing four 10- Inch speakers included. In the early days of Primal Fear he used the Savage type tube amplifiers from the German manufacturer Engl until 2013. Since 2014 he has been using Kemper digital amplifiers, especially for live performances. emulate an Engl profile (amp modeling).[9]
