Zipper Catches Skin ist das 1982 veröffentlichte siebte Studioalbum des US-amerikanischen Hard-Rocksängers Alice Cooper.

Das Album wurde Mitte 1982 in den Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles von Alice Cooper selbst mit Produzent und Bassist Erik Scott aufgenommen, nur der Song I Am the Future wurde von Steve Tyrell produziert. Cooper ergänzte seinen Stil um New-Wave- und Pop-Rock-Elemente und passte sich so teilweise aktuellen Trends an.[1] Scott sagte, das Album "was meant to be lean, stripped down, and low on frills. Punkish and bratty."[2] Cooper beschrieb Zipper Catches Skin in einem Statement zur Zeit der Entstehung als "totally kill. Real hardcore. The stuff that I do has always been a lot like that. In fact, I invented a couple of songs that were remakes of other songs, just for the purpose of attacking clichés. There are no clichés on this album, and I did that for a specific reason. Rock and roll right now is jammed with clichés."[3] Zum Foto auf dem Backcover, das ihn mit Hemd und Krawatte zeigt, sagte er, es sei "very Haggar slacks. I look good. I look like a GQ ad, only I'm zipping up my pants and you can see definite pain on my face."

Der langjährige Cooper-Gitarrist Dick Wagner, der die Band zur Hälfte der Aufnahmesessions verließ, beschrieb Zipper Catches Skin als "the off to the races speedy album"[4] und "drug induced nightmare".[4] Wagner enthüllte später in den Deleted Scenes des Dokumentarfilms von 2014, Super Duper Alice Cooper, dass Cooper zu der Zeit Crack rauchte. Er hatte seine Crackpfeife hinter einem Vorhang auf einem Schemel unmittelbar neben dem Aufnahmemikrofon platziert, so dass er und andere Bandmitglieder während der Aufnahmen immer wieder Crack rauchen konnten. So zählt die Platte neben Special Forces (1981) und DaDa (1983) zu den drei Alben, die Cooper als seine "Blackout"-Alben beschrieb, wenngleich er es schaffte, Zipper Catches Skin in einem Fernsehspot zu bewerben.[5] Er sagte: "I wrote them, recorded them and toured them and I don't remember much of any of that",[6] wobei er nur für Special Forces bis Februar 1982 tourte.[7] Es gab keine Tour zu Zipper Catches Skin, und keine von dessen Songs wurden je live gespielt.[2] Dennoch sagte Cooper, er schätze die Alben, sei überrascht wie gut sie seien und würde sie sogar erneut aufnehmen: "I would actually like to go back and re-record those three albums because I never really gave them their due. I love the songs – I just don't remember writing them. My subconscious was writing some pretty good tracks! There's 'Zorro's Ascent' and 'No Baloney Homosapiens' for example where now I'm going, "Wow, that's clever!" (laughs).[6]

Guarisco von AllMusic schrieb: "While the experimental spirit that drives these songs is refreshing, none of the songs ever jells in a way that would create a cohesive album and none of the songs is strong enough to join the ranks of classics like "School's Out" or "No More Mr. Nice Guy." That said, Zipper Catches Skin contains enough solid tracks to make it a worthwhile listen for hardcore Alice Cooper fans." Er vergab 2,5 von fünf Sternen.[8]
