Lutz, Sohn des bayerischen Historikers [[Heinrich Lutz]], wuchs in Deutschland auf. Nachdem sein Vater an die [[Universität Wien]] berufen wurde, zog die Familie nach Wien, wo Lutz das [[Schottengymnasium]] besuchte. 1968 erhielt er die österreichische Staatsbürgerschaft. 1975 begann er in München ein Philosophie-, Mathematik- und Theologiestudium und später eines der Sozialwissenschaft (Sozial- und Wirtschaftsstatistik) in Wien, welches er mit dem Magister in Statistik 1980 abschloss. Das Master-Studium im Fach Demografie absolvierte er an der [[University of Pennsylvania]]. Die Habilitation erfolgte 1988 an der Universität Wien in Demografie und Sozialstatistik.
Lutz ist Sohn des bayerischen Historikers [[Heinrich Lutz]] und mittlerweile österreichischer Staatsbürger. Er studierte Philosophie, Mathematik und Theologie in München und später Sozialwissenschaft (Sozial- und Wirtschaftsstatistik) in Wien. 1983 legte er ein Doktorat im Fach Demographie an der [[University of Pennsylvania]] ab, 1988 habilitierte er sich an der [[Universität Wien]] in Demographie und Sozialstatistik.


Seit 1994 leitet Lutz das ''World Population Program'' des [[IIASA]], seit 2002 ist er Direktor des Instituts für Demographie der [[Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften|Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften]] inne und ist seit 2008 Professor für Sozialstatistik an der [[Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien]]. 2012 wurde er zum wirklichen Mitglied der philosophisch-historischen Klasse der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften gewählt.

Wolfgang Lutz (* 10. Dezember 1956 in Rom) ist ein österreichischer Demograph mit dem Forschungsschwerpunkt internationale Bevölkerungsentwicklung und Bildung. Zu diesem Zweck gründete er 2010 das Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital (WIC).

Leben

Lutz ist Sohn des bayerischen Historikers Heinrich Lutz und mittlerweile österreichischer Staatsbürger. Er studierte Philosophie, Mathematik und Theologie in München und später Sozialwissenschaft (Sozial- und Wirtschaftsstatistik) in Wien. 1983 legte er ein Doktorat im Fach Demographie an der University of Pennsylvania ab, 1988 habilitierte er sich an der Universität Wien in Demographie und Sozialstatistik.

Seit 1994 leitet Lutz das World Population Program der International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), 1995–1998 war Forschungsdirektor des Österreichischen Instituts für Familienforschung und 1998–2001 Generalsekretär der International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). Seit 2002 ist er Direktor des Vienna Institute of Demography der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften[1] und seit 2008 Professor für Sozialstatistik an der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien.[2]. Nach der Verleihung des Wittgenstein-Preises gründete er 2010 das Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital, einer Zusammenarbeit zwischen den drei genannten Institutionen.[3]
