Die Antwoord (Afrikaans für Die Antwort) ist eine südafrikanische Rap-Rave-Hiphop Band aus Kapstadt. Die Gruppe besteht aus den Mitgliedern Ninja (Rap/Gesang), Yolandi Visser (Rap/Gesang) und dem DJ Producer God (zuvor unter dem Namen DJ Hi-Tek).

Geschichte

Die Antwoord (pronounced [di ˈantvʊərt], Afrikaans for "The Answer") is a South African hip hop group formed in Cape Town in 2008. The group comprises rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser, a male/female duo, and producer god (formerly DJ Hi-Tek). Their image revolves around the South African counterculture movement known as zef and has incorporated work by other artists associated with the movement, such as photographer Roger Ballen. Their unique style is exemplified by their music videos and involves the alternating interplay between Yolandi's high-pitched rhymes and Ninja's swagger, both spoken with their characteristic accents.

In 2009, Die Antwoord released their debut album $O$ for free online and attracted international attention for their music video "Enter the Ninja". After briefly signing with Interscope Records, in 2011 they founded their own label, Zef Recordz, and released their second and third studio albums: Ten$Ion (2012) and Donker Mag ("Dark Power"; 2014). In 2016, they released their fourth album: Mount Ninji and da Nice Time Kid.

Before joining Die Antwoord, du Toit was a member of the music and art group The Constructus Corporation.

She was a member of the South African 'corporate' hip-hop group MaxNormal.tv, in which she played the role of Max Normal's personal assistant.

. Frontmann Ninja (Watkin Tudor Jones) ist in Südafrika ein bekannter Künstler, Musiker und Produzent und wechselte in der Vergangenheit mehrfach seine Bühnencharaktere. Er war unter anderem unter dem Pseudonym Max Normal bei der Gruppe „MaxNormal.TV“ und als Waddy Jones bei „The Constructus Corporation“ tätig. DJ Hi-Tek wird allgemein als drittes Mitglied der Gruppe bezeichnet, doch gibt es zwei Personen, die als DJ Hi-Tek in Frage kommen, vielleicht gibt es aber auch keine konkrete Person dazu. Die Gruppe mischt musikalische Elemente des Rap, Drum & Bass und Elektro mit Texten zwischen Sozialkritik und Satire, geschrieben auf Afrikaans, Xhosa und Englisch. Ihr Debütalbum $O$ erschien im Jahr 2009 auf der Webseite der Band. Als unterstützende Künstler wirkten unter anderem Jack Parow, Jaak Paarl (aka Jaak), Knoffel (aka Garlic Brown), Scallywag and Isaac Mutant mit.

Nachdem das Video Zef-Side im Internet in Blogs und sozialen Netzwerken für Aufsehen sorgte, produzierte die Gruppe mit dem Regisseur Rob Malpage zusammen das Video Enter the Ninja, welches Anfang 2010 mit vielen Klicks bei YouTube zu einem noch größeren viralen Hit wurde. In diesem Video tritt auch der 2011 verstorbene südafrikanische Künstler und DJ Leon Botha auf, der an Progerie litt. Die Gruppe konnte auf dem Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in den USA auftreten.

Im Sommer 2011 begleiteten sie unter anderem die Band Linkin Park als Vorband beim Oberurseler Hessentag im Rahmen der „Projekt Revolution: A Thousand Suns“-Welttournee. In den Jahren 2012, 2015 und 2017 folgten Auftritte auf dem Southside-Festival in Neuhausen ob Eck und auf dem Hurricane Festival in Scheesel.

Nach der Veröffentlichung der Alben Donker Mag (2014) und Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid (2016) kündigte die Band 2017 an, noch im selben Jahr unter dem Titel The Book of Zef ein Album vorzulegen. Im Mai wurde mit Love Drug eine Vorab-Single ausgekoppelt.

(Musikalischer) Stil

Die Gruppe bezeichnet ihre Musik als Zef, dies bedeutet auf Afrikaans umgangssprachlich in etwa „Hinterwäldler“ oder „Prolet“. Die Gruppe selbst versteht unter Zef die unbeschreibbare Mischung aus den verschiedensten südafrikanischen Kulturen, welche sie in ihrer Musik vereint. Im Stile amerikanischen Gangsterraps wird hier unter anderem vom Aus- und Aufstieg aus den sozialen Brennpunkten der südafrikanischen Vororte erzählt (Rich Bitch).

Die Antwoord's male vocalist, Ninja, was part of the South African hip-hop scene for many years, fronting acts such as The Original Evergreens, MaxNormal.TV and The Constructus Corporation. Their debut album $O$ relates to their earlier work, specifically Good Morning South Africa. In the album, multiple tracks are sampled from, or are exact copies of songs on Good Morning South Africa, such as the "Rap Rave Megamix" (where the first glimpses of Jones's Ninja character was seen) were later reformed into the "Zef Side" video, and later "Beat Boy".[1] Ninja told Rolling Stone, "Everything I did before Die Antwoord was me experimenting, messing around and trying to find Die Antwoord . . . everything before it was disposable. It was all throwaway."[2]

Die Antwoord observed that journalists and critics, particularly in the United States, frequently ask if their creative output is a joke or a hoax. When asked if he was playing a character, Ninja said, "Ninja is, how can I say, like Superman is to Clark Kent. The only difference is I don't take off this fokken Superman suit."[3] They have described their work as "documentary fiction" and "exaggerated experience" designed for shock value. Ninja told Spin:

People are unconscious, and you have to use your art as a shock machine to wake them up. Some people are too far gone. They'll just keep asking, "Is it real? Is it real?" That's dwanky. That's a word we have in South Africa, "dwanky." It's like lame. "Is it real?" You have to be futuristic and carry on. You gotta be a good guide to help people get away from dull experience.[4]

Die Antwoord is known for their cult following, in particular the unusually prolific creation of fan art by their followers.[5] Some of their music videos have incorporated artwork by the noted photographer Roger Ballen.[6]

Zef Main article: Zef Die Antwoord's musical and visual style incorporates elements of a "zef" culture, described as modern and trashy, appropriating out-of-date, discarded cultural elements.[7] Yo-Landi said, "It's associated with people who soup their cars up and rock gold and shit. Zef is, you're poor but you're fancy. You're poor but you're sexy, you've got style."[8] Their lyrics are performed in Afrikaans, Xhosa, and English.[9][10]

Kolaborationen

The photographer Roger Ballen helped design the set for their music video "Enter the Ninja".[46] Ballen co-directed the I Fink You Freeky music video.[47] The Erdmann Contemporary Photographers Gallery in Cape Town featured some works of Ballen from the video.[48]

Ninja und ¥o-Landi spielten 2010 die Hauptrollen in Harmony Korines Kurzfilm Umshini Wam.

2014 drehten sie mit dem südafrikanischen Regisseur Neill Blomkamp den Science-Fiction-Film Chappie. In the film, Die Antwoord star as two gangsters (also named Ninja and Yolandi) who act like the parents of Chappie, a sentient robot, and teach him how to be a gangster.[43][44][45] The film was released on 4 March 2015.

Seit 2015 besteht eine Kollaboration zwischen Ninja und ¥o-Landi und dem australischen Designer Ashley Wood. Hieraus entstanden bislang eine Reihe von Designer Toys sowie unter dem Titel Fuck Everyone* eine Comicreihe.

Trivia

Laut einer Videorechtfertigung von Ninja auf YouTube wegen der Verwendung des Wortes faggot (Englisch für "Schwuchtel") in ihrem Lied Fok julle naaiers (Afrikaans für fickt euch ihr Ficker) meinte er, er sei nicht homophob. Außerdem sei DJ Hi-Tek, welcher einer seiner besten Freunde sei, homosexuell. Das Video war eine Reaktion auf die Beschwerden von Interscope Records. Diesen gefiel nicht, dass DJ Hi-Tek das Wort faggot benutzte. Außerdem war ihnen das Album sowieso etwas zu aggressiv, weshalb sie es nochmal überarbeiten wollten. Schlussendlich beendete Die Antwoord die Geschäftsbeziehungen mit dem Label. Ihr 2012 herausgekommenes Album Ten$Ion erschien unter ihrem eigenen Label ZEFRECORDZ. Als sie das Video für die Single Fok julle naaiers zum ersten Mal auf YouTube hochluden, wurde es auf Geheiß von Intercom gesperrt. Sofort posteten sie es auf Vimeo, und da das Video bei ZEFRECORDZ und nicht bei Interscope erschienen ist, gab YouTube das Video wieder frei.
