Malcolm Arthur Smith (geboren 1875, gestorben 25. Juli 1958 in Ascot) war ein britischer Arzt und Herpetologe.
Leben und Wirken[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Smith arbeitete als Arzt in Siam (heutiges Thailand), wo er auch die örtliche Herpetofauna studierte.[1] Er heiratete Eryl Glynne (c. 1893–1930), die selbst an der Bangor University, der London School of Medicine for Women und dem Royal Free Hospital Medizin studiert hatte und mit ihm nach Siam zog, wo sie begann sich für Botanik zu interessieren.[2]
1924 reiste er zusammen mit seiner Frau auf den Malaiischen Archipel, um jeweils herpetologisches bzw. botanisches Material zu sammeln. Vom 15. Januar bis 15. Februar hielten sie sich zunächst auf dem Berg Bonthain im Süden Sulawesis (früher Celebes) auf. Dieser war zuvor bereits von den Schweizer Naturforschern Paul Benedict Sarasin (1856–1929) und Fritz Sarasin (1859–1942) erkundet worden sowie von Everett. Darüber hinaus besuchte das Ehepaar tagesweise zahlreiche der Inseln östlich von Java. Vom 26. Februar bis 29. April hielten sie sich auf Timor auf, zunächst bei Kupang und später weiter im Inland.[3]
1930 verstarb seine Frau bei einem von ihm durch überhöhte Geschwindigkeit verschuldeten Autounfall.[2][4]
Nach seinem Ruhestand kehrte Smith nach Großbritannien zurück und widmete sich der heimischen Herpetofauna. 1947 wurde mit seiner Hilfe die British Herpetological Society gegründet, deren erster Präsident er wurde.[1]
