The Home Depot - Heute [Bearbeiten]
The Home Depot betreibt über 2000 Baumärkte (Stand März 2006) in Nordamerika (USA, Kanada, Mexiko, Puerto Rico) und beansprucht, die größte Baumarktkette der Welt zu sein. Im Schnitt eröffnet alle 48 Stunden ein neuer Markt, im Juni und Oktober 2005 waren es z.B. jeweils über 20 pro Monat. „The Home Depot“ hat 300.000 Angestellte.
The Home Depot besitzt auch Edelbaumärkte und Anwenderläden, wie das EXPO Design Center, Landscape Supply Gartencenter, und eine Reihe von spezialisierten „The Home Depot“-Läden.
Unternehmensgeschichte [Bearbeiten]
Die Firma wurde 1978 in Atlanta von Bernie Marcus und Arthur Blank gegründet. Sie wuchs schnell und 1986 stieg der Umsatz auf jährlich 1 Mrd. US-Dollar. Im Jahr 2004 betrug der Umsatz 73,1 Mrd. US-Dollar.
Im April 2006 gab die Firma bekannt, dass sie ihre Aktivitäten im Internethandel und Kataloggeschäft durch den Erwerb zweier Unternehmen dieser Branchen mehr als verdoppeln will.
Durch die Finanzkrise in den USA merken die Baumärkte dort, dass das Geld nicht mehr so fließt. Aus diesem Grund schließt Home Depot im Moment 49 Standorte und entlässt etwa 7000 Mitarbeiter; das sind etwa zwei Prozent.
Firmenbesitzer Blank kaufte die Atlanta Falcons, ein Team der National Football League, im Februar 2002.
The Home Depot hat nach eigenem Bekunden nach wie vor das Ziel, auch in den europäischen Markt einzutreten. Allerdings wurde dies bisher trotz aller hierzu geführten Firmenübernahmeversuche (Anfang 2004 Kingfisher) bzw. Kooperationsgespräche (Anfang 2000 mit Bauhaus; neuerdings wird mit einer skandinavischen Baumarktgruppe verhandelt) nicht durchgeführt.
