Die Verizon Communications Inc. [vəˈɹaɪzən], oder kurz Verizon, ist ein US-amerikanisches Telekommunikationsunternehmen mit Hauptsitz in New York.

Firmengeschichte

Verizon Communications entstand aus einer Kooperation von Bell Atlantic und GTE. Das Unternehmen beschäftigt 235.000 Angestellte (Stand 2007).

Verizon Wireless, das als Joint Venture zwischen Verizon und Vodafone entstand, ist mittlerweile der größte Mobilfunk-Anbieter in den USA. Hauptsitz ist die ehemalige AT&T-Zentrale in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Verizon Communications hält die Mehrheit an Verizon Wireless.

Verizon hat 2005 die MCI Worldcom-Gruppe für 6,75 Mrd. US-Dollar (5,2 Mrd. Euro) aufgekauft.

Unter dem Namen Verizon Business bietet Verizon in Europa ausschließlich Dienstleistungen für Geschäftskunden und Behörden an. Die deutsche Niederlassung (Verizon Deutschland GmbH) hat ihren offiziellen Firmensitz in Dortmund.

Im Geschäftsjahr 2007 hat Verizon 93,4 Mrd. US-Dollar Umsatz gemacht, bei einem Gewinn von 5,5 Mrd. US-Dollar.

Am 21. November 2008 berichtet der Nachrichtensender CNN, dass Angestellte des Mobilfunkproviders Verizon Wireless sich in den letzten Monaten illegal Zugang zu den Mobilfunkdaten des damaligen „President-Elect“ Barack Obama verschafft haben. Dabei wurden die Datensätze mit Telefonnummer und Zeitpunkt der von Obama getätigten Anrufe ausspioniert.
